John H Abeles MD is a USA based venture investor, director, consultant, entrepreneur and philanthropist.
Abeles was born in 1945 in Bulawayo, Rhodesia and received his degrees in Medicine and Pharmacology from the University of Birmingham, England, in 1969. He has a diploma in music from the Royal Schools of Music for piano and violin. He is married to Mimi, née Gordon, and have three grown children, all performing artists in drama and music.
He practiced Medicine in London, before joining the Pharmaceutical Industry as a Senior Medical Executive, with Sterling Drug, Pfizer and Revlon Health Care. In 1975 he became a Wall Street health-care analyst with Kidder Peabody until 1980, when he formed MedVest and later Northlea Partners.
In 1980, Abeles became the President of MedVest, Inc., a business and financial consulting firm. He has been instrumental in helping promulgate many early stage medical and other companies. In March 1992, Abeles founded Northlea Partners Ltd., a venture and private capital, family partnership headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, which holds numerous investments primarily in the healthcare industry
He has been a Managing Member of ProMed Capital LLC, a New York investment group promulgating Israeli medical venture companies and investments. ProMed has intitiated three major Israeli investments: Althera (local, alpha-particle brachytherapy treatment of solid tumors); Endogun (surgical system for gynecology and urology surgery); HDH ( stitchless vascular anastomosis system).
Abeles has been a director of Oryx Technology and served as Chairman of its board of directors from October 1993 until April 1997. During this time the company's stock price dropped from $30/share to $12.50/share. He has also served on the board of directors of I-Flow Corporation (recently acquired by Kimberly-Clark), a company that manufactures infusion devices ; DUSA Pharmaceuticals, a publicly traded company, which is developing dermatology and photodynamic therapy products; Combimatrix, a diagnostic company; and CytoCore, Inc, which is researching medical diagnostic equipment.
He has helped to promulgate Encore Medical, acquired by Blackstone Capital; Newport Pharmaceuticals, acquired by Merck & Co.; Imre Corporation, acquired by Fresenius SE; and ProCyte, acquired by PhotoMedex.
Regarding private companies, he is a Director of Alison Raffaele Cosmetics; BioStar; Unimedica; ContraFect; and MediSync BioSciences. He was an early promulgator of InSound Corp, an advanced hearing aid company, recently acquired privately by Sonova; and was a Director of Textronics, acquired by Adidas.
Abeles also serves as an Advisory Board Member of the College of Chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, and has been on the Advisory Board of the Higuchi BioSciences Institute at the University of Kansas. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine, London.
He is a Director of the International Opera Alliance, New York[1] and a member of the Players Club, New York, which is given to the promulgation of the dramatic and performance arts. He also on the board of the New Group, a theater organization in New York.[2] Abeles is the President of Dalyda Finance Corp, which supports and invests in promising performing artists, artists and projects. Northlea and also Dalyda make investments in theater and film.
